The biggest issue with the current manner of care is the “one size fits all” mentality of it. Instead of actually treating the individual as a whole. My child has sensory processing disorder, anxiety, low self esteem, dyslexia, adhd and thanks to Covid depression.
We are fortunate to be in an income bracket that has allowed us to treat all of these issues as they came to light, have her in a small private school that allowed her 1:1 attention frequently and a wonderful Counsellor post Covid to deal with everything.
Had we just accepted the affirmative model, she would have succumbed to being a lifelong medical patient, something no one should be comfortable with unless it is unavoidable. I truly believe this would have brought suicide in the end.
We are by no means out of the woods. Public awareness is essential. Currently the general public thinks that the transgender community is totally oppressed. There will always be some who will oppress others but the average person does not put any energy into that sort of behaviour. Unfortunately this serves to have the opposite end result, providing immense support where it is not needed putting kids at risk.
Everyone has bought into lies/untruths. I have close friends who despite the reality I’m living still believe, kids are not being transitioned, hormones are not being prescribed and surgeries don’t happen. Since I am part of a network or parents living this, I know this is happening all the time.
Ken Zucker knew what he was doing and did a great job. I know parents who used his services and their kids desisted. Their kids really don’t want to have anything said about that portion of their lives because it now seems ridiculous to them.
We need more therapists like him. There is a new resource available called GETA. Any therapists who prefer good old fashioned exploratory therapy should make contact.
